Hi readers – thanks for dropping by. If you love comics, sci-fi, medicine, history, documentaries, thrillers or a combination of those things, you’ve come to the right place. We are developing Surgeon X-tra: a sci-fi comic web experience that explores a future world where AntiMicrobial Resistance (AMR) is rife.

Rosa Scott, an unconventional and deadpan surgeon becomes Surgeon X, a vigilante doctor who uses experimental surgery and black market drugs to treat patients. She’s also hellbent on manipulating her twin sister and half brother, to help her discover what happened to their microbiologist mother, who dies in suspicious circumstances.

The original Surgeon X project was published by Image Comics in 2016 and featured 200 pages of comics, 30 mins of drama animations and 90 mins of documentaries (film and podcasts). As we near the 100-year anniversary of the discovery of antibiotics (2028), by Alexander Fleming, we’re working to enhance and release the comic, films and podcasts digitally and free to all.

The original team are writer SARA KENNEY TV, animation, games and comics (BBC, Channel 4, Avery Hill) and the late, master artist JOHN WATKISS (Sandman, Conan) who joined forces with KAREN BERGER, award-winning and Vertigo-founding editor to produce this unique, darkly comic medical thriller.

The next iteration brings on artist WARREN PLEECE with colourist SOFIE DODGSON joining the team. Mairead Ruane is Producing, working with 3 x lived experience AMR experts, Vanessa Carter (UK/ South Africa), Rob Purdie (US) & Bhakti Chavan (India). We’re collaborating again with Digital Producer, Michael Mensah-Bonsu.

COMIC CREATOR QUOTES

  • “SURGEON X is everything you could want from a new creator-owned series, nuanced writing, incredible artwork and a premise that hooks you instantly and won't let you go. It's disturbing in the best way.  Karen Berger has always been a visionary and with SURGEON X and it looks like she's found another genius in Sara Kenney!"

    Jeff Lemire (DESCENDER)
  • “SURGEON X reads like a ticking bomb in a tragic future that we have no idea when it will go off. And, the more we read, the more curious we get, interested and invested in these characters, unaware that as we relate to their conflicts, we get closer and closer to the imminent explosion.”

    Fábio Moon (TWO BROTHERS)
  • “A fantastic, gripping debut — and chillingly possible glimpse of a not too distant future. Read it before it's reality."

    Brian Azzarello (100 BULLETS)
  • “There’s a lot happening in Surgeon X, we’re caught in the middle of the turmoil, things are going sour as we follow the main character’s quest into a world of unrest. The story leaves the readers on the edge of their seat, wondering: is there hope for this world?”

    Gabriel Bá (TWO BROTHERS)
  • “This is fantastic! Smart, relevant, and prophetic, this is the type of book that can only be written by someone with a profound understanding of medicine, politics, and the reality of where we might be headed. SURGEON X has all the horror of a zombie book, but it's scarier because there's nothing implausible about it.”

Sean Murphy (TOKYO GHOST, PUNK ROCK JESUS)
  • “SURGEON X is what would happen if Osamu Tezuka's Black Jack was rewritten by P.D. James (and edited by Alan Moore). Thrilling and all-too-real.”

    Samuel Sattin (LEGEND)
  • “SURGEON X is a stunner — my favorite sort of science fiction: a thrilling exploration what optimism and heroism can look like when the world seems to be at its darkest. The medical, political, and ethical questions raised in this all-too-plausible near-future setting are jarringly relevant, and Kenney’s firm grasp on the science involved gives her characters nuanced, complex perspectives on their world and their options within it.  Watkiss’ art is gorgeous, and whether it’s sudden, explosive action or the quiet suspense of social tension, the pacing and storytelling are consistently magnificent.”

    Jen Van Meter (HOPELESS SAVAGES)
  • “Taut, fast-paced and visceral, SURGEON X is a book whose time has come, one that looks ahead to a medical and environmental apocalypse that is all too plausible. With echoes of V for Vendetta, SURGEON X is an intellectual thriller that delivers both action and brains.”

    G. Willow Wilson (MS. MARVEL, AIR)
  • "Timely, relevant and thought provoking. SURGEON X cuts sharp!"

    Jock (WYTCHES)
